When a hurricane remains offshore, brave men and women known as the Hurricane Hunters fly into the eye of the storm to retrieve scientific information otherwise not obtainable by traditional weather observations. The aircraft is staffed by the Air Force Reserve 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron.
The plane, a traditional Lockheed-Martin WC-130J aircraft, is operated by the 403rd Wing, based at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi.
On this week's show, we introduce you to pilot Captain Will Simmons, who shares his stories from inside storms such as Hurricane Maria. He also tells us what it takes to safely operate this vital weather missions.
