Have you missed winter? Yeah, we saw a winter storm the first week of January, but after that, it was more like spring across the Southeast. Temps were well above average over most of the area.
Charleston, SC saw their 4th warmest January on record. Columbia, SC saw their 4th warmest January on record. But wait it was warmer for parts of South Carolina. Greer, SC was the 2nd warmest and Spartanburg, SC tied for the warmest January on record.
North Carolina was just as warm. Lumberton, Asheville and Lincolnton all came in as the 4th warmest January on record. The warmth spread across the state. Cape Hatteras was the 4th warmest January on record, as was Boone, NC.
Both North and South Carolina also picked up on some beneficial rainfall. Charlotte, NC recorded their 10th wettest January. Columbia, SC recorded their 8th wettest January. Most of the rain came with the threat of severe weather as January 20th- 23rd produced a widespread Severe Weather outbreak. Numerous tornadoes touched down in Georgia, thankfully only a few minor tornadoes were recorded in southern South Carolina.
So the question is, will the warmth and rain continue?
The Climate Prediction Center has issued their monthly outlooks.
Temps look to be 40% above normal.
Precipitation outlook shows us being around normal.
It looks like winter may not be around much this month! We are getting into the timeframe where we have wild swings in our weather. I think we will see more warm days compared to cold days. I wouldn’t be shocked if old man winter tries to throw us something wintry during the mid to end of the month.
