Hurricane Matthew is undergoing rapid intensification Friday as it moves across the Caribbean Sea near the coastlines of Venezuela and Colombia. 75mph winds seen Thursday night jumped to 100mph by 2AM early Friday morning. Matthew is now a Category 3 Major Hurricane with winds at 115mph, according to the 11a et update form the National Hurricane Center.
Matthew is now entering the deeper, warm water epipelagic (photic) zone of the Caribbean Sea. This top layer of ocean water has been thickening all summer due to little storm activity to otherwise stir the water surface. This provides plenty of surface fuel as sea surface temps are currently widely at at 86°.
This weekend, the storm is expected to make a hard right turn towards Cuba - - and possibly on towards the waters off the United States coastline.
